In March, the apple trees blossom. By September, it is time for the harvest. Those are two good reasons to come to Jana. There are ten other months in which to find your own.
If you are choosing the best time to visit Naggar and Jana, start with the day you want to have. Walking and cultural outings suggest one kind of weather. A winter stay with a fireplace suggests another. A visit built around the orchard asks you to pay attention to the trees as well as the calendar.
We host throughout the year. The final approach to The Lazy and Slow is always on foot, and the season changes what to bring for that walk.
March: the beginning of the orchard year
March is our usual blossom month. It is a brief change in a place we live with all year, and a lovely time to be among the trees. If the blossom is the reason for your visit, ask us how the orchard is looking before you finalise the dates; weather can shift the timing.
Bring layers for cold mornings and evenings, and leave some freedom in your walking plans. You can spend time around the orchard, visit Naggar or ask about a path suited to the current conditions. Spring does not have to come with a busy itinerary.
Late spring and summer: let the days open out
In the warmer months, choose a base you would be happy to spend time in between outings. You might want a day around Naggar, a locally guided walk, and another day without transport to arrange.
The glasshouse is there for the hours between those plans. Choose a record, bring out a board game or take your time with a painting. The supplies are available, and you do not need to arrive already good at any of it.
Book ahead around popular holiday dates, and leave extra time for the road. The orchard may be the reason you are coming, but the journey still shares the valley with everyone else’s plans.
The rainy months: come with room to change your mind
Himachal’s monsoon broadly falls between June and September, with conditions varying across the state and from year to year. For Jana, ask us about the weather and approach close to your travel dates, and check official forecasts and road advice.
A rainy stay can make the indoor spaces an important part of the holiday. There are books, paints, candle-making materials and more than fifty records in the glasshouse café. Meals are included, so a day spent at the property can stay that way.
Travel flexibility matters in this season. Leave a margin around onward connections, and take current advice before setting out on a forest walk or waterfall visit. A seasonal guide can help you choose a month; it cannot tell you what a particular path will be like tomorrow.
September: the apple harvest
September is our usual harvest month. If you are curious about the orchard as a working place, ask what is happening during your dates. Picking follows the fruit and the weather, so the calendar gives a window rather than an appointment.
There is plenty to notice without turning the visit into an activity. Ask about the trees and the work of caring for them. If you would like to join any picking, talk to us first; staying in an orchard does not mean every tree or task is open to guests.
Autumn: walks, village days and looking up
For a trip built around time outdoors, autumn is worth considering. You can balance visits to Naggar with time in Jana and walks chosen around the day’s conditions. As the season moves on, carry warmer layers and plan around the available daylight.
Leave an evening unfilled if you are interested in the night sky. Our setting away from town lights gives you a reason to go outside after dinner. Look at the moon phase when choosing dates for stargazing, and remember that cloud cover will matter as much as the calendar.
Winter: somewhere warm to return to
Our rooms have oil-filled radiator heaters. The common space has a fireplace, and we have bonfires in the garden when conditions permit. You can spend the day knowing there is somewhere warm to gather afterwards.
A winter visit can be simple: breakfast, some time outside when the weather allows, a book, a meal, another record. The sauna and cold plunge are available as part of the stay, and you decide whether to use them.
Come prepared for cold, with warm layers and shoes suited to the approach. Check the path and road conditions before setting off. Snow is possible, but it is not something we can book for you.
If you are still deciding, tell us what you hope to spend your days doing. We can help you choose a time that suits it. And once you have your dates, read about the journey to Jana.
